The Manchester Marathon Returns — A Celebration of Endurance, Community, and the Spirit of the City

On Sunday 19 April, more than 42,000 runners will take to the streets for the 2026 Manchester Marathon, one of the UK’s biggest and most iconic running events. With a famously flat route, huge crowds, and a buzzing city‑wide atmosphere, it’s no surprise the marathon sold out months in advance.

The race begins near Old Trafford, with elite wheelchair athletes setting off at 08:55 and elite runners at 09:00, before thousands more follow in staggered waves throughout the morning. From there, runners sweep through South Manchester, passing through Sale and Altrincham, before looping back toward the city centre and finishing on Oxford Road, framed by the University of Manchester.

It’s a route that showcases Manchester at its best — energetic, diverse, and full of character.

A Marathon That Feels Like Manchester

What makes the Manchester Marathon special isn’t just the scale — though being the second‑largest marathon in the UK is impressive in itself — it’s the atmosphere. Tens of thousands of supporters line the streets, cheering on runners of all abilities, from first‑timers to seasoned athletes chasing personal bests.  It’s a day where the whole city comes alive.  And for us at StavesArt, it’s a perfect moment to celebrate Manchester’s identity through the artwork that has become a favourite among locals, students, and visitors alike.

Celebrate the City With Our Manchester Globe & Manchester Spiral

Few cities lend themselves to illustration like Manchester — a place where industrial heritage meets modern creativity, where football, music, and culture intertwine.
That’s why we’re proud to showcase two of our most beloved pieces during marathon season:

The Manchester Globe

A hand‑drawn, intricately detailed globe capturing the city’s landmarks — from Old Trafford and the Etihad to Beetham Tower, the Northern Quarter, and the historic mills that shaped Manchester’s identity.

The Manchester Spiral

A dynamic, swirling celebration of the city’s architecture, culture, and energy. The spiral format brings Manchester’s story to life in a way that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Both pieces are perfect for anyone running the marathon, supporting a loved one, or simply celebrating the city they call home.
